Course Description
The course deals with an overview of basic elements of group process. It also focuses on stages of group development, introduction to group work, guidelines for multicultural practice, ethical and professional issues in group practice, group leadership, and phases of group therapy and counseling. The course is a combination of didactic and experiential elements, including demonstrations, short lectures, questions and answers, and discussions of group process concerns. There will be a focus on the stages in the evolution of groups. Various theories will also be explored throughout the course duration.
The course consists of an intensive experience of both theoretical and practical nature. The course entails supervised experience as a leader and co-leader of groups, with opportunities for group supervision and discussion on the nature of the work of group leading. The goal of the course is to provide an integration of concepts and skills; theory is applied to actual practice of group work. To accomplish this, the course consists of brief lectures (followed by a demonstration group and discussion of the demonstration); opportunities to co-lead groups with peers under the supervision and ongoing feedback of the tutor and feedback of classmates; participation in demonstrations of various group models; and experiential practice in a weekly group.
